General Information
Attendance
Your child’s regular and prompt attendance at school is crucial to his/her success. I can’t emphasize this point enough! Most kindergarten learning activities are group oriented and involve interaction with classmates. Therefore, it is hard to make up work at home. Please view school as a priority and see that your child attends everyday, except in cases of illness or emergency. Your child may at school 7:45am. Your child will be counted tardy if they are not in the classroom by 8:15am. Please make sure your child is here on time. If your child will be absent, please let Mrs. Sheriff know ASAP.

Communication Folder
Your child will be bringing a yellow communication folder home each day. Please get in the habit of checking your child's folder each evening. We will be sending information home about projects, homework, important classroom and school news, and much more! When you need to send money to school, please use the enclosed zipper pouch. Also, if you have a note, please include it in the folder or pouch, as I will check it daily.
It is a Northside tradition to send home the majority of information with students on Monday. While it is important to check your child's folder daily, please keep in mind that we will be saving as much as possible to send home on Mondays.

Standards Based Grading
Throughout the year, please watch for your child's work to come home and look for special markings from Mrs. Sheriff to know how to better help your child succeed!
Please know that your child will receive report card grades based on a numbering system. The following is the standards based grading system:
1 - Your child is having difficulty with the listed skill, needs a lot of assistance and has not yet mastered the skill.
2 - Your child has not yet mastered the listed skill independently and may need assistance to correctly complete the skill.
3 - Your child is on benchmark and has mastered the listed skill independently.
4 - Your child has independently mastered the listed skill and is generalizing it into other subjects and concepts without being explained. He/She is able to go above and beyond what is expected.
We will have three conferences this year. You will receive more information when the dates approach.

Birthdays
Your child’s snack day will be assigned on or near his/her birthday. If you choose to send in a special STORE BOUGHT treat on that day for his/her snack day, please do so! Please plan to send this special treat to school with your child in the morning, or plan to bring it to the classroom during arrival. I will NOT be able to pick this up from the office if you deliver it during the school day.
Please do not send birthday party invitations to school for Mrs. Sheriff to pass out to other students. It is your responsibility to take care of that before or after school hours with the other families. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding!

Lunch
Your child has two options for lunch each day:
1. Send a healthy lunch to school. (Please no glass containers!!)
2. Set up a lunch account and send money to school as needed.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND MONEY TO SCHOOL DAILY FOR YOUR CHILD'S LUNCH. You may send a check or cash to school for lunch money or deposit money electronically into your child's lunch account. Your child will then have a lunch card to scan when they go through the line.
We encourage children to make smart and healthy eating choices at lunch. We help children know the importance of eating the healthy brain-food first before munching on desserts. We also encourage all children to at least try a couple of bites of the food they have.
We would LOVE for you to join your child at lunch once we have had a chance to establish routine. Please wait until the 4th week of school to plan a lunch visit with your child! You may meet us in the cafeteria at 11:35 at the RED tables!

Homework
After your child has put in a long day at school, it is important for your child to have time to be a kid! I encourage you to allow your child to participate in activities, build relationships, and just play! However, there will be times that your child will bring home some math and reading activities to complete with you. The main purpose of these activities is to give your child additional practice with the skills we are working on at school and to better communicate with you what we are diligently learning at school. This is a BIG year for your child when it comes to learning to read. It is important to read to/with your child DAILY to foster a love of reading and show them that you value the time you spend together.
